Overview
Every registered vehicle in Spain has two core documents that together prove its legal status and technical specifications — understanding what each one covers helps when buying, selling, or dealing with any vehicle-related procedure.
Requirements
- Applies to anyone who owns, buys, sells, or otherwise deals with a vehicle registered in Spain
Step-by-step process
- The permiso de circulación (registration certificate) identifies the vehicle's registered keeper and confirms it's authorised to be on the road — this is what changes when ownership transfers
- The ficha técnica (technical data sheet, formally the tarjeta ITV since a recent reform merged aspects of the two) records the vehicle's technical specifications — engine, emissions, weight, and similar — used at every ITV inspection
- Keep both documents with the vehicle, since they're commonly requested together for registration, ITV, insurance and sale purposes
- If either is lost, a replacement can be requested through the DGT
Required documents
- N/A — this article explains the documents themselves rather than a separate application process
Common mistakes
- Confusing the two documents' purposes — the permiso de circulación is about who owns/is authorised to drive the vehicle, while the ficha técnica is about the vehicle's technical specifications
- Losing track of either document and not realising a replacement can be requested relatively easily
Practical tips
- Keep both documents in the vehicle itself (or a secure digital copy via the miDGT app) so they're available if requested during a traffic stop or at an ITV appointment
- When buying a used vehicle, always check these documents match the vehicle's actual details (VIN, plate) before completing a purchase
