Registering a vehicle bought in Spain is comparatively simple compared with importing one from abroad — the dealer or seller typically handles most of the paperwork with you as part of the sale.

Requirements

  • The vehicle must have valid Spanish insurance before it can be legally driven
  • For a used vehicle, the change of ownership must be processed alongside registration (see 'Changing vehicle ownership')

Step-by-step process

  • For a new vehicle bought from a dealer, the dealer typically registers it in your name as part of the sale, though it's worth confirming this explicitly
  • For a used vehicle bought privately, complete the change of ownership at the Jefatura de Tráfico (or online via the DGT) within 10 working days of the sale
  • Arrange Spanish vehicle insurance before the vehicle is driven, since this is a legal requirement
  • Pay any applicable registration tax (impuesto de matriculación) if due — this mainly affects certain vehicle types and emissions bands, not most standard used-car sales between individuals
  • Receive the updated permiso de circulación (registration document) showing you as the registered keeper
