Overview
Selling a car in Spain involves more than just handing over the keys — completing the change of ownership correctly protects you from remaining legally and financially responsible for a vehicle you no longer own.
Requirements
- You must be the registered owner (or have legal authority to sell on their behalf) to transfer the vehicle
Step-by-step process
- Agree the sale price and complete a written sale contract with the buyer
- Both parties complete the change-of-ownership notification (notificación de venta) to the DGT, ideally at the point of sale
- Provide the buyer with the vehicle's permiso de circulación, ficha técnica and current ITV certificate
- Confirm the change of ownership has been processed, since until it is, you may remain liable for fines or taxes linked to the vehicle
Required documents
- Vehicle's permiso de circulación and ficha técnica
- Current ITV certificate
- Sale contract
- Your ID
Common mistakes
- Not submitting the change-of-ownership notification immediately, remaining technically liable for fines or the annual road tax (IVTM) after the vehicle has actually changed hands
- Selling without a written contract, leaving no clear record of when the sale and handover actually happened
Practical tips
- The notificación de venta can be submitted online via the DGT if you have a digital certificate or Cl@ve, making it quick to complete right after the sale
- Keep a copy of the submitted notification as proof you've done your part, even after the buyer completes full registration in their name
