Overview

Every registered employee and self-employed worker in Spain pays into Social Security, funding pensions, healthcare, unemployment benefits and sick pay. Understanding roughly how contributions are split helps you make sense of your payslip and future benefit entitlements.

Requirements

  • Applies to all registered employees and self-employed (autónomo) workers
  • Contribution amounts are based on your salary (employees) or chosen contribution base (self-employed)

Step-by-step process

  • As an employee, check your payslip's deduction section — your share is roughly 6.4% of your gross salary, covering common contingencies, unemployment and training
  • Your employer pays a significantly larger share on top (typically around 30%+ of your gross salary), which doesn't appear as a deduction from your pay but is a real employer cost
  • As a self-employed worker, you choose your own monthly contribution base within legal limits, which determines both your monthly payment and your future benefit entitlements
  • Review your accumulated contributions periodically through your Vida Laboral (working life) report

Required documents

  • Payslips (employees) or contribution payment records (self-employed)

Common mistakes

  • Assuming your payslip deduction is the full contribution — it's only your personal share; your employer pays substantially more on top
  • As a freelancer, choosing the lowest possible contribution base without considering how it reduces your future pension and benefit amounts

Practical tips

  • Higher contributions generally mean higher future benefit entitlements (pension, unemployment pay) — it's not purely a cost, it's also building your entitlement record
  • Self-employed workers can change their contribution base up to six times a year to match changing income
