In Spain's public healthcare system, specialists aren't usually booked directly — your primary-care doctor refers you first. Private care works differently, letting you book most specialists directly.
Requirements
- For public specialist care, you generally need a referral (derivación) from your primary-care doctor
- For private specialist care, you need active insurance or willingness to pay directly — many specialists can be booked without a referral
