Similar to dental care, routine eye tests and glasses/contact lenses are generally not covered by Spain's public healthcare system — but genuine eye conditions and diseases are treated through the public ophthalmology service.

- Eye conditions or diseases (not just needing a vision correction) can be referred to public ophthalmology through your primary-care doctor
Step-by-step process
- For a routine vision check or updated glasses prescription, visit any optician (óptica) directly — no referral or appointment through the public system is needed
- For a suspected eye condition or disease, see your primary-care doctor first, who can refer you to public ophthalmology (oftalmología) if appropriate
- For urgent eye problems (injury, sudden vision loss, severe pain), treat this as an emergency and go to urgencias or call 112
