Accessing disability or long-term care services

How to apply for official disability recognition in Spain, and what support becomes available as a result.

Last reviewed: 2026-06-15Processing times vary by region and can take several months, given the assessment process involved.

Overview

Spain's disability and long-term dependency support is accessed through a formal recognition process — an officially assessed 'grado de discapacidad' (disability grade) or dependency grade, which then unlocks specific benefits and services.

Requirements

  • Legal residence in Spain (Spanish nationality, or a valid residency permit if you're a foreign national)
  • Empadronamiento at your address
  • Medical or psychological reports supporting your application

Step-by-step process

  • Gather current medical and/or psychological reports documenting your condition
  • Submit your application for disability grade recognition to your Comunidad Autónoma's relevant department, or to IMSERSO directly if you live in Ceuta or Melilla
  • Attend a formal assessment, where an evaluation team applies standardised national criteria to determine your disability grade
  • Once your grade is officially recognised, this is valid across all of Spain and unlocks access to specific benefits, tax reductions, and services depending on the grade awarded
  • For dependency-specific support (help with daily living due to age, illness or disability), a related but separate assessment under the Ley de Dependencia determines your dependency grade and associated services

Required documents

  • NIE/DNI
  • Empadronamiento certificate
  • Medical and/or psychological reports
  • Completed application form for your Comunidad Autónoma or IMSERSO

Common mistakes

  • Submitting an application without sufficiently detailed or current medical reports, which can delay the assessment
  • Not realising the disability grade and the dependency grade are related but separate processes, each unlocking different specific support

Practical tips

  • The formal disability grade, once recognised, applies nationwide, so it's worth completing even if you plan to move regions within Spain later
  • Ask your primary-care doctor or a specialist involved in your care for help preparing supporting medical documentation, since this significantly affects the quality of your application
