Closing a bank account

Overview
Closing a Spanish bank account is generally straightforward, but doing it in the wrong order — before redirecting direct debits, for example — can leave you with unexpected fees or bounced payments.
Requirements
- The account must have a zero or positive balance, with any owed fees settled, before most banks will close it
Step-by-step process
- Redirect any direct debits (domiciliaciones) and incoming payments (like salary) to a new account first
- Cancel or transfer any linked products (cards, standing orders) tied to the account
- Withdraw or transfer the remaining balance to zero
- Formally request closure, in writing or via your bank's app/branch, since simply emptying the account doesn't automatically close it and can leave you liable for ongoing maintenance fees
- Confirm in writing that the account has been closed and no further fees will apply
Required documents
- ID
- Account details
- Written closure request, in the format your specific bank requires
Common mistakes
- Assuming an account closes itself once the balance reaches zero — most banks require an explicit closure request, and will otherwise keep charging maintenance fees
- Closing an account before redirecting all direct debits, causing bounced payments and potential penalty fees elsewhere
Practical tips
- Keep a small buffer in the account until you're certain every direct debit and pending transaction has cleared or been redirected
- Request written confirmation of closure and keep it — useful if any unexpected fee appears afterwards
