Overview
Most banks in Spain offer both resident and non-resident accounts. A resident account is usually simpler and cheaper once you have your NIE and empadronamiento in place; a non-resident account can be opened before you formally move.
Requirements
- NIE (required by all banks, resident or not)
- Proof of address, at least for a resident account
Step-by-step process
- Compare banks — fees, English-language support and branch availability vary a lot
- Book an appointment or start an application online, if the bank offers it
- Provide your documents and complete identity verification
- Activate your account and request a debit card
Required documents
- Passport or NIE
- Proof of address (for a resident account) or your foreign address (for non-resident)
- Proof of income or employment, for some account types
Common mistakes
- Opening a non-resident account and not switching to resident status once eligible, missing lower fees and better terms
- Not checking maintenance fees, which can be significant on some standard accounts if minimum balance/income conditions aren't met
Practical tips
- Some banks offer fee-free accounts if you meet a minimum monthly income or direct-debit condition — check before committing
- Ask specifically whether English-language support is available if you'll need it
