Spanish citizenship requirements checklist
The exams, conduct standards and integration requirements common to most Spanish nationality applications.

Overview
Beyond meeting your specific route's residency-length requirement, Spanish nationality applications share a common set of exams and standards. This checklist covers what's generally required, regardless of which residency-length route applies to you.
Requirements
- Relevant to anyone applying for Spanish nationality by residence, regardless of which residency-length category applies
Step-by-step process
- Pass the CCSE exam — 25 multiple-choice questions on the Spanish constitution, government structure, culture and society, generally requiring at least 15 correct answers within 45 minutes
- Pass the DELE A2 Spanish-language exam, unless you're exempt as a national of a Spanish-speaking country
- Demonstrate 'good civic conduct' — generally evidenced by a clean criminal record in Spain and in any country you've resided in during the qualifying period
- Demonstrate sufficient integration into Spanish society — assessed through your overall application and the exams above, rather than a single separate test
- Gather and legalise your civil documents — birth certificate and, if applicable, marriage certificate — apostilled and translated
Required documents
- CCSE certificate
- DELE A2 certificate (unless exempt)
- Birth certificate, apostilled and translated
- Criminal record certificates covering the qualifying residence period
- Empadronamiento history
Common mistakes
- Delaying the exams until the rest of the application is ready, then finding availability limited when you finally book
- Letting a CCSE certificate expire (after 4 years) before completing the full application, requiring a re-sit
- Submitting civil documents that aren't properly apostilled or translated, causing delays
Practical tips
- Book both exams as soon as you're eligible, since demand for slots can be high and both certificates have their own validity windows
- Study materials for the CCSE are published officially and widely available — the question bank is large but consistent, so genuine preparation makes a real difference
