Overview

Most interactions with the Spanish tax authority can now be handled online, without an in-person visit — but you need the right digital access set up first. This guide covers what's available and how to get access.

Requirements

  • A NIE/NIF, and one of: Cl@ve, a digital certificate, or (for some services) a reference number

Step-by-step process

  • Set up Cl@ve, Spain's general digital identity system, if you don't already have it — this unlocks most Agencia Tributaria online services and many other public administration portals
  • Alternatively, obtain a digital certificate (certificado digital), a more robust option often preferred for freelancers and businesses with frequent filing needs
  • Use the Sede Electrónica (electronic office) for most formal procedures — filing returns, checking notifications, requesting certificates
  • Use Renta WEB specifically for your annual income tax return, and the Agencia Tributaria's mobile app for simpler tasks like checking your draft return or refund status

Required documents

  • NIE/NIF
  • Documents required for your specific Cl@ve or digital certificate registration method (in-person verification, video call, or existing digital certificate from another EU country, depending on your situation)

Common mistakes

  • Waiting until a filing deadline is close to set up digital access, when registration itself can take a few days depending on the method chosen
  • Not realising the mobile app and full Sede Electrónica offer different levels of functionality — some procedures still require the full desktop site

Practical tips

  • Cl@ve is generally the simplest option for most individuals; a digital certificate is worth the extra setup effort if you'll be filing frequently (freelancers, property owners with regular obligations)
  • Keep your digital certificate or Cl@ve credentials secure and renew them before expiry, since losing access right before a deadline is a genuinely stressful situation to be in
