Overview
A growing number of Spanish administrative procedures can be completed entirely online, through each body's own Sede Electrónica (electronic office). Doing so usually requires one of two forms of digital identification: a digital certificate or Cl@ve.
Requirements
- A digital certificate or Cl@ve registration, since these are how you prove your identity online for most procedures
- Digital copies (scans or clear photos) of any supporting documents the specific procedure requires
Step-by-step process
- Confirm the specific body's Sede Electrónica supports the procedure you need — not everything is available online yet
- Log in using your digital certificate or Cl@ve
- Complete the relevant online form, attaching digital copies of required documents
- Submit, and save or download the confirmation receipt (justificante), which proves the submission was made and when
- Track the status of your submission online where the specific procedure allows it
Required documents
- Digital certificate or Cl@ve
- Digital copies of any documents the specific procedure requires
Common mistakes
- Not saving the confirmation receipt after submitting — this is your proof the procedure was filed, and when
- Submitting poor-quality scans or photos, which can cause a submission to be rejected or delayed
- Assuming every procedure is available online — some administrative processes still require an in-person appointment
Practical tips
- Keep a dedicated folder (digital) with clear scans of your key documents (passport, NIE, proof of address) ready to attach, since many online forms ask for the same core set
- If a portal seems to only accept certain file formats or sizes, check this before attempting to upload, since vague upload errors are a common source of frustration
