Overview
Your Social Security number (NUSS, Número de la Seguridad Social) is distinct from your NIE. You'll need it before starting any job or registering as self-employed — it's how the Social Security system tracks your contributions.
Requirements
- A valid NIE
- A valid residency and work authorisation appropriate to your situation, where required by your nationality and visa type
Step-by-step process
- Complete form TA.1, available from the Social Security website
- Apply through the Social Security electronic office (Sede Electrónica de la Seguridad Social) if you have a digital certificate or Cl@ve, or in person at a Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social (TGSS) office if not
- Submit your NIE, passport and, if applicable, your residency/work authorisation alongside the form
- Wait for your number to be assigned and confirmed
