Overview
Once you're registered (empadronado) at an address, you can request official proof of that registration whenever you need it — for healthcare, school enrolment, opening a bank account, or various other procedures. There are two versions: a quick informal one and a formal certified one.
Requirements
- You must already be registered (empadronado) at the address the certificate will show
Step-by-step process
- Decide which version you need: the volante (a simpler, faster printout confirming your registration) or the certificado (a more formal, officially signed and stamped document, sometimes required for specific legal procedures)
- Request it online through your ayuntamiento's website if available, by appointment, or in person at the town hall
- Provide your ID to confirm you're requesting your own record
- Collect the document — often issued instantly for the volante, sometimes requiring a short wait for the certificado
Required documents
- Passport or NIE
Common mistakes
- Requesting a volante when the receiving institution specifically asked for a certificado, or vice versa — check which is required before requesting
- Assuming one certificate covers every purpose — some procedures want a certificate issued very recently, so an older one may be rejected
Practical tips
- If you know you'll need to submit proof of address to more than one institution, request several original certificates at once
- Many ayuntamientos now let you download a digitally signed certificate online with a digital certificate or Cl@ve, without needing to visit in person
