Getting a NIF in Spain

Overview

The NIF (Número de Identificación Fiscal) is the number the Spanish tax authorities use to identify you. For foreign individuals who already have an NIE, the good news is there's nothing extra to apply for — your NIE functions as your NIF automatically. A separate process only applies in specific situations.

Requirements

• If you already have an NIE, it is your NIF — no separate application is needed
• If you need a tax ID before your NIE has been assigned (for example, to complete a specific transaction urgently), you can request a special, temporary NIF from the Agencia Tributaria, identifiable by a distinct leading letter

Step-by-step process

• If you already have an NIE, simply use it wherever a NIF is requested — no extra step required
• If you genuinely need a NIF before your NIE is ready, submit form Modelo 030 to the Agencia Tributaria requesting a special NIF
• Once your definitive NIE is later assigned, it replaces the temporary NIF for ongoing use

Common mistakes

• Searching for a 'NIF application process' when you already have an NIE — there's nothing more to do

• If a form or bank asks for your 'NIF' and you're an individual with an NIE, just provide your NIE — they're the same number
