Overview

When you move into a home where utilities are already connected, you'll usually need to formally change the account holder (cambio de titularidad) rather than starting a brand-new connection — it's faster and avoids a gap in service.

Requirements

  • The consent or cooperation of the outgoing account holder is generally needed, or proof you're the new legitimate occupant (rental contract or deed)
  • A Spanish bank account (IBAN) for the new direct debit

Step-by-step process

  • Ask the outgoing occupant or your landlord for the current provider's name and account/contract reference
  • Contact the provider directly (by phone, online, or app, depending on the company) to request the change of holder
  • Provide your NIE, new address, and bank details
  • Take a meter reading (or ask the provider to do so) on the day the change takes effect, so billing splits accurately between the outgoing and new holder
  • Confirm the change has taken effect on your next bill

Common mistakes

  • Not agreeing who is responsible for any outstanding balance before the change goes through, leading to disputes later
  • Delaying the changeover, which can result in a period with no account holder of record and complications if there's a fault
  • Assuming all utilities use the same process — water is often handled separately by the municipality or a regional company, not the same provider as electricity or gas

Practical tips

  • Take photos of meter readings on your move-in day regardless of who initiates the changeover — it protects you either way
  • If the previous holder is unresponsive, most providers can still process a change of holder with proof of your rental contract or deed alone
