Overview

Spain's education system is organised into clear stages, each with its own age range and, for some, compulsory status. Understanding this structure helps you know what to expect as your child (or you, if pursuing further study) moves through it.

Requirements

• Applies to any family with children in Spain, and to adults considering further study

Step-by-step process

• Educación Infantil (0-6 years): early years education, split into two cycles (0-3 and 3-6). The 3-6 cycle is free but non-compulsory in most public and state-subsidised (concertado) centres
• Educación Primaria (6-12 years): compulsory primary education, split into three two-year cycles
• Educación Secundaria Obligatoria — ESO (12-16 years): compulsory secondary education across four years
• Bachillerato (16-18 years): non-compulsory upper-secondary education across two years, organised into different tracks (Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Arts, General), typically leading to university entrance exams or vocational training

Required documents

• Empadronamiento certificate, for public school admission priority
• Previous school records, ideally translated, when transferring from abroad

Common mistakes

• Not realising primary and ESO (ages 6-16) are the only truly compulsory stages — Infantil and Bachillerato are not mandatory, though widely attended
• Assuming the system works identically to your home country's stage names — Spain's stage boundaries and ages don't always match other countries' equivalents

• Ask about language-support programmes for non-Spanish-speaking children — many regions offer dedicated support for newly arrived students
• Bachillerato track choice affects university admission options later, so it's worth understanding the tracks even years in advance
