Overview
If you already have a Spanish mobile number and want to switch providers, you don't need to give it up. Number portability is a free, legally guaranteed right in Spain, and unlike some countries, it doesn't require you to request a code from your old provider first.
Requirements
- An active Spanish mobile number you wish to keep
- Your personal details and current provider information, requested by the new provider
Step-by-step process
- Choose your new provider and plan
- Sign up with the new provider, providing your name, ID, bank account (for contract plans) and the number you want to port
- The new provider handles the switch directly with your old one — you don't need to contact your current provider yourself or request a separate code
- The switch is completed within a maximum of 24 working hours from the formal request, and is carried out overnight to avoid service interruption
Required documents
- DNI, NIE or passport
- Your current phone number and provider name
- Bank account details, for contract (postpaid) plans
Common mistakes
- Contacting your old provider first, expecting to need a special code — in Spain, the new provider initiates and manages the entire switch
- Not double-checking the ported number is active before cancelling any other backup arrangement
Practical tips
- Porting is completely free — no provider is allowed to charge a fee for it
- The technical switchover always happens overnight (typically between 2am and 6am) specifically to avoid disrupting your service during the day
