If your existing licence isn't from a country with a Spanish exchange agreement — or you don't hold a licence at all yet — you'll need to go through Spain's own licensing process: theory test, practical test, and a medical/psychological assessment.

Requirements

  • You must be old enough for the licence category you're applying for (18 for a standard car licence)
  • You must pass a medical and psychological aptitude test at an authorised centre

Step-by-step process

  • Enrol with an autoescuela (driving school), which most people use to prepare for both the theory and practical tests, though it isn't strictly mandatory
  • Complete your medical and psychological aptitude test at an authorised centre (centro de reconocimiento de conductores)
  • Pass the theory test (examen teórico), covering road rules and signage
  • Complete practical driving lessons and pass the practical test (examen práctico)
  • Receive your Spanish driving licence once both tests are passed
