International transfer fees and exchange rates

How to compare the real cost of an international transfer, since the advertised fee is rarely the whole story.

Overview

The biggest cost in many international transfers isn't the fee your bank quotes — it's the exchange rate margin, which is often hidden and can cost far more than the fee itself if you don't compare it properly.

Requirements

  • Applies to any transfer outside the SEPA zone, or in a currency other than euros

Step-by-step process

  • Get the total cost quote from your bank: the stated fee plus the exchange rate they're offering
  • Compare that exchange rate against the real mid-market rate (available from independent rate trackers), to see the actual margin being charged
  • Compare the same total-cost calculation from at least one dedicated international transfer provider
  • Choose based on total cost for your specific amount and currency pair, not just the advertised fee

Required documents

  • None required to compare — just the transfer amount and currency pair

Common mistakes

  • Comparing only the stated transfer fee between providers, ignoring the exchange rate margin, which is often the larger cost
  • Assuming your regular bank automatically offers the best rate — dedicated transfer providers are frequently cheaper for the same transfer, sometimes substantially

Practical tips

  • For large or regular transfers, even a small improvement in exchange rate margin can add up to a meaningful amount — it's worth the few minutes to compare
  • Some providers offer rate alerts, letting you send a transfer only once the exchange rate reaches a level you're happy with
