Overview
Nearly all Spanish banks offer full online banking, letting you manage your account, make transfers, and view statements without visiting a branch. Setup is usually quick once your account is open.
Requirements
- An active Spanish bank account
- A mobile number for verification, in most cases
Step-by-step process
- Request your online banking access details when opening your account, or through your branch/app afterwards if not provided automatically
- Receive your initial login credentials, usually a customer number and temporary password, or a activation code by SMS
- Log in for the first time and set a permanent password following your bank's security requirements
- Set up two-factor authentication (see 'Two-factor authentication and digital verification') if it isn't automatically enabled
- Download your bank's mobile app for easier day-to-day access, if you plan to use it
Required documents
- Account number or customer ID, provided by your bank
- Mobile phone, for verification codes
Common mistakes
- Losing initial login credentials before completing first-time setup, requiring a reset through the bank
- Not setting up two-factor authentication promptly, which most Spanish banks now require by default under EU regulation anyway
Practical tips
- If you're not confident online in Spanish, many major banks' online platforms offer an English-language option in account settings
- Set up online banking as soon as your account is active — you'll need it for almost everything else, including many of the processes in these guides
