Credit scores in Spain

How creditworthiness actually works in Spain — there's no single 'credit score' like in some other countries.

Overview

Unlike some countries with a single, universal credit score, Spain uses a different system: banks primarily check the CIRBE (Central de Información de Riesgos), a Banco de España registry of your existing debts, alongside separate default files like ASNEF for unpaid debts.

Requirements

  • Applies to anyone applying for credit (a loan, credit card, or mortgage) in Spain

Step-by-step process

  • Understand that CIRBE isn't a 'blacklist' — it simply records your existing loans, credit cards with a balance, and guarantees, regardless of whether you've ever missed a payment
  • Understand that ASNEF (and similar files like BADEXCUG) specifically record unpaid, defaulted debts — this is what most people mean by a 'bad credit history' in Spain
  • Request your own free CIRBE report directly from the Banco de España's electronic office, to see exactly what's on record before applying for credit
  • Check whether you're listed on a default file like ASNEF if you're concerned about a past unpaid debt, since you're also entitled to check this for free
  • If you're listed incorrectly, contact the creditor or the file operator to dispute it

Required documents

  • NIE or DNI, to request your own CIRBE or ASNEF report

Common mistakes

  • Assuming CIRBE is a blacklist or negative mark — it's neutral and simply reflects your existing debt levels, used by lenders to assess capacity, not character
  • Not checking your own records before applying for credit, and being caught off guard by a decline linked to a debt you'd forgotten about or didn't know had gone to default

Practical tips

  • Both CIRBE and ASNEF reports are free to request for yourself — there's no need to pay a third-party service to do this for you
  • If you're newly arrived in Spain with no CIRBE or ASNEF history at all, that's neutral, not negative — but it does mean lenders have less to assess, which can itself make initial approval slightly harder until you build some local history
