Overview
Unlike a limited company, a self-employed person (autónomo) in Spain isn't legally required to have a separate business bank account — but keeping personal and freelance finances separate makes bookkeeping and tax filing considerably easier.
Requirements
- Registration as autónomo with the Agencia Tributaria and Social Security (see the Paperwork section for that registration process)
Step-by-step process
- Decide whether to use a standard personal account or a dedicated freelancer/business account — many banks now offer accounts specifically marketed for autónomos, often with relevant features like invoicing tools
- If choosing a dedicated autónomo account, compare fees against what you'd get from simply using a personal account with good organisation
- Use the chosen account exclusively for freelance income and business expenses, to keep records clean for your quarterly and annual tax filings
- Set up SEPA B2B direct debits if you need to collect payments from business clients via direct debit, which works differently from consumer direct debits
Required documents
- NIE/NIF
- Proof of autónomo registration (alta de autónomo)
Common mistakes
- Mixing personal and freelance transactions in one account without any separation, making quarterly tax filings (IVA, IRPF) considerably more time-consuming
- Assuming a dedicated autónomo account is legally required — it isn't, though many freelancers find it genuinely useful for organisation
Practical tips
- Many banks offer autónomo-specific accounts with reduced or waived fees for a promotional period, or ongoing discounts tied to your freelance activity — worth comparing against a standard account
- Keep clear digital records of every business transaction from day one, since this significantly reduces the effort of your quarterly VAT and income tax filings
